The International Planned Parenthood Federation Africa Regional Office organized a Pre-CPD and Post 2015 consultative meeting in Nairobi Kenya  IPPFAR from 5-7 March 2014. Representatives of African Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) and International NGOs working in Africa have released a communiqué with 16 asks to African governments.

In the presence of members of African members of parliament, government officials and intergovernmental agencies, working in the area of population and sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR) the CSOs called upon governments  to demonstrate political will, leadership and commitment and implement actions that ensure achievements of gender equality and women’s empowerment including   bodily integrity, dignity and autonomy. AWLN members Fatimata Sanou and Hon. Sylvia Ssinabulya were present at the meeting, and each chaired a session.

AWLN’s key areas of concern were highlighted in the final document, including “unmet need for family planning, high rates of maternal mortality and integration of HIV and AIDS programs in SRHR services.”

The outcome document also called upon governments to:

  • Prioritize and adequately finance universal access to comprehensive, quality and integrated SRHR services including adequate counseling and information and access to comprehensive abortion care
  • Reposition family planning as a key development driver and ensure universal access to the full range of family planning choices to reduce maternal mortality.
  • Ensure equitable access to a full range of acceptable, affordable, safe, effective and high-quality contraceptives of choice and user- friendly, comprehensive maternal health services particularly abortion and post-abortion care.
